Äpfel, Nuss und Mandelkern

Here we are, the third apple-themed Speednotes post in as many days. This one’s headline „apples, nuts, and almonds“ is a quote from „Knecht Ruprecht“, a German poem written in 1862 by Theodor Storm. Ruprecht is a servant to St. Nicholas, and feared by many children for he will cane them if they haven’t been good.

Reactionary patriarchy notwithstanding, it’s still frequently quoted, although apples are no longer in such high demand as presents – at least, not edible ones.
