A three-letter word, VAR may seem short enough for speednoting purposes. However, to print these three letters, you’ll need to put pen to paper not only 3, but 5 times. Real speednotes can do better than that!
Er ist da und wird wohl auch bleiben, der Videoschiedsrichter. Besonders beliebt ist er nicht, manchmal auch nicht besonders zuverlässig. Aber eins ist er ab heute auf jeden Fall: Gegenstand einer Speednote! Um sie zu entwickeln, beginnen wir wie immer mit dem Kernelement, dem „Schiedsrichter“. Was macht ein solcher, wofür ist er zuständig?
To develop a suitable pictorial sign, let’s first look at what refereeing is all about. What does a referee (or arbitrator, even) do? Ideally, he or she will make just decisions in cases of conflict, thus delivering justice – typically represented by balance:
Ausgewogene Urteile und gut abgewogene Entscheidungen – kurz, Gerechtigkeit!
So, we do have a sign for balance, now all we need to do is add a circle as „head“ (see „Between the Signs„, p. 46) to depict the person who does the balancing, the referee:
Mit einem Kreis als Kopfzeichen (vgl. „Zwischen den Zeichen„, S. 44) wird die „Gerechtigkeit, Ausgewogenheit“ zu einem Bildzeichen für die Person, die (hoffentlich) für Gerechtigkeit sorgt – den Schiri!
Jetzt ist es nur noch ein kleiner Schritt zum Videoschiri, denn ein Notizzeichen für „Video“ haben wir bereits, und dies kombinieren wir jetzt wie folgt:
Replace the ‚head‘ with the pictorial sign for video, which we introduced only recently, and get a VAR pictorial – as easy as that, thanks to our speednotes being so VARiable!
